Artist Spotlight: Mack McKenzie
Originally based out of Dayton, Ohio, Mack McKenzie now calls Cleveland his home and base of operations for his brand of country music. Writing from the real life experience of the working class, Alternative-Country and Roots Rock are the cornerstone of Mack’s music . Mack McKenzie and his band have made the region take notice of what new country music can be again, versus what is being heard on the radio. A 101st Airborne Combat Veteran, Mack has seen the world, both good and bad and it shines through in his music. One full length album, A Million Miles and a follow up EP, Consciousness, have laid the foundation of Mack McKenzie’s catalogue, with a second full length album on its way. Sonically similar to acts such as Son Volt, Drive-by Truckers and Jason Isbell, Mack’s music has depth and meaning the everyday working class individual can relate to.
Friday, April 12th, Mack will be releasing his second full length album, “Kill The Buffalo”. The album is a deeper and darker approach to the Alt-Country he has created in the past, both sonically and contextually. In Mack’s own words “I wanted to create an album that could be equally as interesting with or without lyrics. This album is also the first time we have recorded any cover material. After a great deal of debating, I decided that Tom Petty’s ‘You Got Lucky’ would be the best fit for the album. The approach to ‘Kill The Buffalo’ has been all or nothing since the planning phases. I reached out to my favorite musicians and leaders of Alt-Country industry to be a part of this record. Brett Robinson (Pedal Steel / Whitey Morgan and The 78s) lent his talents to many tracks on the album, notably, a brand new approach to the famous ‘You Got Lucky’ melody. Providing fiddle, and additional vocals was the lovely Lucy Cochran (Stump Tail Dolly), along with Lee Carroll (Exile) on the keys. Alex Munoz (Guitar/Nikki Lane – Producer/Margo Price) brought an abundance of musical talents to round out ‘Kill The Buffalo’. I set out to make the best album I could, and got the best players I could to supplement my band in the studio. We are beyond excited about having created this album and look forward to releasing the album to the public.
